IDNtribune.com, Jakarta – Dozens of demonstrators from the Civil Society Coalition, including students, labor unions, and environmental activists, staged a protest in front of the House of Representatives (DPR RI) building in Senayan, Jakarta, on Monday (October 6, 2025).
The protesters voiced concern over the increasing repression faced by activists in recent months. According to the group, demonstrations across several regions have frequently ended with arrests and criminalization of civil society members.
In their statement, the coalition presented two main demands.
First, they strongly condemned the repressive actions of the police, describing them as far from meeting basic humanitarian standards.
Second, they called for the immediate release of political prisoners, including activist Del Pedro Merhain and others who were accused of incitement merely for expressing their opinions.
The coalition emphasized that freedom of expression is a constitutional right and urged the government to respect democratic values and protect civic space in Indonesia.
