IDNtribune.com, Mandalika – MotoGP world champion Marc Marquez has sustained a serious injury after suffering a right collarbone fracture following a high-speed crash during the main race at the Mandalika Circuit. The incident occurred on the opening lap when the Ducati factory rider was struck from behind by Marco Bezzecchi, who was traveling at high speed.
The impact caused Marquez to fall awkwardly, landing on his right arm — the same arm that has undergone several surgeries due to previous injuries.
MotoGP Medical Director Dr. Ángel Charte told DAZN that initial examinations revealed a small fracture in Marquez’s right shoulder. “Marquez is in good condition, with only slight pain. X-ray results show a minor fracture in his right shoulder,” he stated.
However, Dr. Charte added that a definitive diagnosis can only be made after further tests are conducted in Europe. “There may be complications since this is the same arm that has previously undergone surgery. A CT scan in Madrid will be required to determine whether surgery is necessary,” he explained.
In an official statement, Ducati confirmed that the injury involves Marquez’s right collarbone, not his shoulder as previously reported. “Following today’s crash at Mandalika, Marc Marquez has sustained a right collarbone injury. The Spanish rider will fly to Madrid tonight for further medical tests and to decide on the next course of treatment,” Ducati announced.
Ducati Team Manager Davide Tardozzi also confirmed the injury to Dorna Sports during the race, saying, “There is evidence of a fracture in the right shoulder, but we need to carry out a CT scan to investigate further and determine whether surgery will be required.”
The incident marked a disappointing end to the weekend for Marquez, who had just celebrated his world championship victory a week earlier in Japan. It also extended his misfortune at Mandalika, where he has yet to finish a grand prix in four appearances.
Speaking to DAZN after the race, Marquez said his condition would need to be evaluated more thoroughly. “I can’t say I’m fine, but considering how bad it could have been, I got off lightly. It seems there might be a ligament tear in my collarbone, but that’s just an initial assessment,” he said.
Marquez emphasized that such incidents are part of racing. “Things like this happen. Bezzecchi hit my rear wheel and came to apologize afterward. Now, I’ll wait for the doctors’ evaluation to know how long recovery will take,” he concluded.
